Sudoku is the number puzzle that has taken the world by storm.  The name Sudoku is from the Japanese meaning “single number,” however the puzzle was actually invented by an American architect and was originally called “Number Place”.  After becoming popular in Japan it was reintroduced to the United States with its new moniker, and has been a hit ever since.

A Sudoku puzzle is made up of a 9 by 9 grid of squares, so that there are 9 large squares containing 9 small squares each.  The object of the puzzle is to place the numbers 1 through 9 so that each number appears exactly once in every row, column, and large square.  This also means that no number can be repeated in any row, column, or large square.

Solving a Sudoku puzzle takes a lot of thought and a little strategy!  To figure out which numbers to place in which squares, you have to find places where only one number would be logical.  Scanning, comparing, analyzing, trial-and-error, and the process of elimination must work together to find the solution.  Sudoku is the perfect pursuit for those seeking an engaging and challenging puzzle!
